When is Commencement?
The Main Commencement Ceremony will take
place on Saturday, December 20, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. in the Comcast Center. The
Individual College Ceremonies will take place throughout the afternoon and evening
on Sunday, December 21, 2008.
Why are there two days of ceremonies?
Students from all colleges celebrate together at the Main Commencement Ceremony and the keynote speaker will address graduates and their guests. The next day, each graduate is recognized individually at College Ceremonies. Diplomas will be mailed mailed several weeks later.
How do I know when and where my Individual College Ceremony will be?

Do I need tickets the Main Commencement?
May GraduatesMay graduates receive up to 6 guest tickets for the Main Commencement Ceremony in the Comcast Center. Tickets may be obtained from the Registrar's Office (in the Mitchell Building) between April 28-May 2, during regular business hours. Tickets are limited and will be released on a first-come, first-served basis. Extra tickets (if available) will be distributed May 6th and 7th.
December Graduates
No tickets are required for the December graduate main ceremony.
There are no tickets required for Individual College Ceremonies, but some
do require that you RSVP.
Where and when should I report for the Main Commencement Ceremony?
Graduates should plan to assemble by 5:45 pm in the Comcast Center (exact location depends upon the weather). You should wear your academic regalia and line up by college.
What about ordering announcements?

Where do I order the Main Commencement DVD?
The 2008 Main Commencement Ceremony DVD may be purchased online from www.gradimages.com for

Where do I order a frame for my diplomaa?
You may order diploma frame from the University
Book Center on campus.
What do I wear to my graduation?
You will need to purchase a graduation package (cap, gown, hood & tassel). You can purchase your regalia at the University Book Center. Pricing information is here.
How do I know what color hood I should get?
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) hood has a white collar and the Bachelor of Sciences (BS) hood has a gold collar.
Can I participate in commencement if I will not be finished with course work until August?
To participate in the individual college ceremonies, you have to have completed all your coursework and requirements. Check with your advisor.
How do I know if I am graduating with honors?
Your individual college should contact you about whether you will be graduating with academic honors. Please direct questions to your college's dean's office.
Who are the Senior Marshals?
Senior Marshals are students invited to represent the graduating class based on their scholastic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and contributions to the campus community. They are nominated by faculty and staff and selected through an application process. Marshals will be recognized at the Main Commencement Ceremony.
Will there be a rehearsal?
No. Senior Marshals will be prepared to guide fellow graduates on Commencement day.
Can I get a Senior Portrait taken?
There will be photographers at the Main and Individual College Commencement Ceremonies.
What is the Senior Class Gift?
Each year, seniors contribute to the class gift in order to give back to the University. The 2006-2007 Senior Class Gift, decided upon through voting sponsored by the Senior Council, elected to support the creation of the new Northgate Park. The University of Maryland and the City of College Park, developed plans for a park at the intersection of Route 1 & Paint Branch Road. This park will bridge the City of College Park and the University of Maryland. The class gift will contribute to a prominent feature of the park. Visit Senior Class Gift for more details.
