This December's campus-wide ceremony will take place on Saturday, December 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the Cole Student Activities Building. The procession of students begins at 6:40 p.m.
This is a first-of-its-kind commencement ceremony.
In an effort to better capture the student experience and engage more students in a celebration of their achievements, the university challenged students to create a video that shares their personal UMD story. Instead of a traditional speaker, December 2013 marks the first time that student-created videos will be premiered at commencement.
In addition, the president will honor faculty who were nominated by graduating students for having an impact on their education and lives.
The campus-wide commencement ceremony represents the culmination of a student's academic career at the University of Maryland. Unlike the individual college or school ceremonies, it is an opportunity for the president to congratulate the graduates as a group.
Although graduates do not walk across the stage in the campus-wide ceremony, it is at this ceremony that the degrees are officially conferred. At the end of the ceremony, the graduates will turn their tassels from the right to the left.
The university encourages graduates, their family and friends to attend this approximately 90-minute event marking the beginning of the two-day commencement celebration.
Tickets are not required for the December 2013 commencement ceremonies.
