Congratulations to the class of 2017! The University of Maryland welcomes you to our May 2017 Commencement website, where graduates, family members and the university community may find information about the ceremonies. These events are not only a celebration of the graduating students’ accomplishments at the University of Maryland, but also an occasion to acknowledge our joint enthusiasm for their future endeavors. The university recognizes that commencement is a milestone in our graduates’ lives and, as such, we strive to ensure that everyone enjoys their experience. The campus-wide ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 21, and the individual college and school ceremonies will occur at various times on Saturday, May 20 and Monday, May 22. The colleges and schools will contact graduating students with specific information pertaining to the individual ceremonies. Contact the college or school directly for more information regarding the individual ceremonies.


The university is pleased to provide a real-time stream of the campus-wide ceremony on the commencement website beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 21. The ceremony will also be cablecast on UMTV in Prince George's and Montgomery counties. On-campus viewers can watch UMTV on channel 38. Off-campus viewers should check their local listings for UMTV.

Eligibility

 

All university coursework requirements must be completed by the time of graduation. Your student account must be cleared with the university before your diploma will be mailed. This includes any outstanding Health Center charges, parking fines, library fines, etc. Check with the Office of the Bursar at 301.314.9000 to be sure that you have financial clearance.  For more information regarding the graduation application and commencement honors, review the Undergraduate or Graduate catalog.

Diplomas

 

Diplomas will be mailed several weeks
after graduation.

Graduation Checklist

 

  • Complete a senior audit.
  • Apply for graduation
    (Deadline is February 7, 2017).
  • Meet all university requirements
  • Settle your student account.
  • Update your address and email address on Testudo.
  • Check the University Commencement website for schedules and other helpful information
  • “Like” University of Maryland Commencement on Facebook.
  • Purchase your regalia from the University Book Center.
  • Conduct an exit interview with the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Make arrangements for guests attending your graduation ceremonies.

Tickets

 

Tickets are required for the Spring 2017 campus-wide ceremony.

Each student will receive 4 tickets.

 

Each graduate will receive four guest tickets and one processional ticket for their personal use. Graduates may claim tickets through their online athletic ticket account beginning Friday, May 5. All students who have applied for Spring 2017 graduation and completed the graduation checklist will receive an email from the ticket office on Wednesday, May 3, with instructions for claiming their 4 tickets. For questions regarding claiming tickets or issues logging into your athletic student ticket account please contact the ticket office at 301.314.7070.

 

Additional tickets are not available for purchase or download. Students who need extra tickets to the campus wide ceremony should reach out to friends or classmates who may not be attending the campus wide ceremony or using all of their tickets, and obtain additional tickets from them.  Please note that the tickets have bar codes and will be scanned. Copies of tickets will not be accepted.

 

Most individual college and school ceremonies don’t require tickets, however we recommend that you check with your college and or school to check that there is not an RSVP or ticketing system in place.

Parking

 

On May 21, vehicles heading to the campus-wide ceremony will be directed to the parking area closest to the Xfinity Center.

 

On May 20 and 22, parking on campus is free and open. All meters are turned off and no special permits are required. Please note that as May 22 is a week day, parking may be limited. Please plan to allow some extra time for parking prior to your ceremony. Click here for an interactive map of campus.

 

Shuttles

 

On May 21, shuttle bus service will be available from the College Park Metro Station to the Xfinity Center.  Service time is TBD.

 

On May 20 and 22, shuttle service will be available between the College Park Metro Station and the various individual ceremony sites.  Time and routes are TBD.

Accessibility

 

Guests who need disability accommodations or have questions regarding the accommodations
for the campus-wide ceremony may contact the Office of Special Events at events@umd.edu or 301.405.4638.

 

There is a designated disability seating area for the campus-wide ceremony. Due to limited space, we ask that only one family member sit with the guest in the disabled seating section, and that additional family members sit in the nearby sections.  Volunteers will be on hand to help guests find seating that best fits their needs.

 

Disability parking is located on the first floor of the Terrapin Trail Garage, located next to the Xfinity Center.  A state issued handicap permit OR a disability parking permit (provided by the Office of Special Events) is required to park in this location for the campus-wide ceremony.  If you are in need of a disability parking permit, please email the Office of Special events at events@umd.edu and include your name, mailing address and telephone number.  Permits and a detailed letter are mailed out approximately two weeks prior to the ceremony.

 

Sign language interpreters are available upon request for the commencement ceremonies. Please contact the Disability Support Service at 301.314.7209 or dhhs@umd.edu to make arrangements.

Regalia

 

The University Book Center is the official supplier of commencement regalia for the university, with Oak Hall as the official provider.  Cap and gown packages can be purchased at The University Book Center, located in the Stamp Student Union.

 

For information about class rings and announcements, visit www.balfour.com.  Balfour representatives will be at Grad Fair to take orders and showcase the Maryland announcements and class rings.

Undergraduate and Master’s Degree Students
Undergraduate and master's degree students must purchase their regalia from the book center. The following items are required and sold as a package:

  • Cap
  • Gown
  • Departmental hood (Bachelor of Arts hood
    has a white velvet, Bachelor of Science hood has a gold velvet)
  • Stole of gratitude
  • Tassel with official medallion

 

Graduates may purchase regalia packages at the University Book Center’s Grad Fair—March 7, 8 and 9 from 10 a.m.–6 p.m.  The undergraduate package will cost $138.98 and the master's degree package will cost $149.98. Regalia cannot be purchased online. Please email mfoster5@umd.edu if you live out of state and will need regalia shipped to you. Items may be shipped for an additional $18.95. If you have questions, contact the University Book Center at 301.314.9231.

 

Doctoral Students
Doctoral students may rent or buy their regalia. If you choose to rent your regalia, it must be picked up from the book center (shipping is not available). The cost to rent regalia is $220.98 and the cost to purchase regalia is $1034.98. To order or rent regalia visit the University Book Center..

Photos and Flowers

 

In order to commemorate this milestone in our graduates’ lives, GradImages will take photographs of each graduate participating in the campus-wide commencement ceremony prior to the procession. While there is no obligation to purchase the prints, the graduate will receive color proofs by mail approximately two weeks after commencement. In order to receive the proofs, please make sure that you complete the company's address card, distributed in the line-up area prior to the procession.
