Graduate FAQ

Q: What is the difference between the main commencement ceremony and the individual college ceremonies?

A: Students from all colleges and schools celebrate together at the main commencement ceremony, with a keynote speaker addressing graduates and their guests. The next day, each graduate is recognized individually at his or her college or school ceremony.

We encourage to you participate in both the main and individual ceremonies.

Diplomas will be mailed several weeks later.

Q: How do I know when and where my individual college ceremony will be?

A: The schedule is available here.

Q: Where and when should I report for the main commencement ceremony?

A: Graduates should plan to assemble by 6:00 p.m. in full academic regalia in the Auxiliary Gym (Room 0601) of the Comcast Center. You will line up by college. The procession of graduates will begin promptly at 6:40 and the ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Q: What about ordering announcements?

A: Announcements can be ordered through the University Book Center online at www.ubc.umd.edu or by phone at 301.314.7839.

Q: What do I wear to my graduation?

A: You will need to purchase a graduation package (cap, gown, hood and tassel) at the University Book Center. Pricing information is here.

Q: Can I participate in commencement if I will not be finished with course work until August?

A: To participate in the individual college ceremonies, you have to have completed all your coursework and requirements. Check with your advisor.

Q: Who are the senior marshals?

A: Senior marshals are students invited to represent the graduating class based on their scholastic achievement, extracurricular involvement and contributions to the campus community. They are nominated by faculty and staff and selected through an application process. Marshals will be recognized at the main commencement ceremony.

Q: Will there be a rehearsal?

A: No. Senior marshals and commencement volunteers will be prepared to guide fellow graduates on commencement day.

Q: What is the All Student Giving Campaign?

A: In honor of this milestone, the former Sr. Class Gift effort has evolved to an All Student Giving effort at the University. Students from across campus choose to financially support the causes they believe in the most-from the university's community outreach and partnerships to student groups conducting discovery and research to solve tomorrow's complex global issues-Maryland students leave a lasting and impactful legacy through exceptional scholarship, service and charitable support.
