Family & Friends FAQ

Q: I have a disabled or elderly passenger who cannot walk very far. What should I do?

A: The University of Maryland does not provide wheelchairs. There are long hallways in the Comcast Center and much walking is required. If your guest cannot walk the distance, we recommend that you rent a wheelchair before arriving. Due to limited space, the reserved seating area is restricted to the person with the disability and one guest. Additional members of your party should sit in regular public seating areas.

Q:I am driving to the ceremony and have a state-issued disability parking permit. Where can I park?

A: You may park in any officially marked parking space. We have also reserved a floor of the Arena Garage (lot TTG), which is located off of Route 193 and provides easy access to the Comcast Center. If you do not have a state-issued permit, you may contact the Office of Special Events at 301.405.4638 or events@ur.umd.edu.

Q: My family member is deaf or hard of hearing. Will an interpreter or any other accommodations be provided?

A: The main ceremony will be closed-captioned on the jumbo screens in the Comcast Center. Sign Language Interpreters are available upon request. Please contact the Disability Support Service at 310.314.7209 or dhhs@umd.edu to make arrangements at least three weeks prior to commencement.

Guests who require parking or special assistance at the main ceremony may contact the Office of Special Events at events@ur.umd.edu. or 301.405.4638.

For information regarding sign language interpreters, wheelchair accessibility or other special-needs accommodations for individual ceremonies, contact your school or college.

Q: Where can I find accessible restrooms at the university-wide ceremony?

A: Locations with accessible restrooms will be identified by signage with the handicapped symbol.
